Presented by the CapU Global Roots Series and Presentation House Theatre
Grammy Award nominee, virtuoso oud player and composer, Rahim AlHaj deftly combines traditional Iraqi melodies with contemporary stylings and influences. After fleeing Iraq in 2000 he translated the suffering, joy, anxiety and determination he experienced as a political refugee through music
In 2015, AlHaj was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honour for traditional arts in the U.S.A. He has performed and recorded with masters ranging from genre-busting guitarist Bill Frisell to modern accordion innovator Guy Klucevsek to indy-rock pioneers REM.
AlHaj’s trio includes Iranian santour maestro Sourena Sefati and world percussion master Nicolas Baker.
