Politics, Sex and Quebec: Plan B

Sea Theatre is pleased to present the West Coast premiere of Michael Healey’s Plan B, a political Canadian farce addressing the complexities of intimacy using the tenuous relationship between Québec and English Canada to explore the topic of betrayal, both personal and political. Michael Healey is a Governor General Award-winner for his Play The Drawer Boy. Plan B won the 2002 Dora Mavor Moore award (Toronto) for Best New Play. It runs May 14 to 29 at Presentation House Theatre, North Vancouver.

“…Michael Healey has created a hard-edged but hilarious political satire… It’s essential theatre…” -Maclean’s

High-level meetings to negotiate the departure of Québec from Canada are charged by personal impulses toward seduction and betrayal, union and division, intimacy and distance. The action takes place in a hotel bedroom and a boardroom – a private space and a public space. Music, humour, sex and politics are the key metaphors in this truly Canadian farce.

Sea Theatre Artistic Director Bill Devine unites a powerhouse line-up of talent for Plan B: the cast includes Adam Henderson, France Perras, Howard Siegel and Jacques Lalonde. The creative team is rounded out by Lynda and Gary Chu (set), Graham Ockley (lights) Dorothy Dittrich (sound) and Sandy Buck (costumes).

Since 1985, Sea Theatre has developed a reputation for productions that emphasize provocative writing from the international repertoire, with an emphasis on Canadian playwrights and their works. Sea Theatre is dedicated to producing committed, innovative and highly intelligent theatre. The company’s shows have garnered numerous Jessie Richardson Awards. Critically acclaimed productions include Popcorn, On The Open Road, The Dissociates and The Dunsmuirs: Alone at the Edge.

Plan B opens Friday, May 14, at 8 pm, and runs nightly through until May 29 (Sunday and Monday nights dark). There will be one pay-what-you-can preview on May 13, and one Saturday matinee at 2pm on May 29. All performances are at Presentation House Theatre (333 Chesterfield Ave, North Vancouver). Tickets are $22/28, except Tuesdays, which are 2-for-1. Tickets are available at the Presentation House Box Office: 604.990.3474 or www.phtheatre.org.
