Banana Musik takes its name from the label Kris’s father gave to his original basement-recorded cassette music. It is a memory play about aging, reciprocity, and care. Kris, a 50-year-old “immigrant kid,” invites the audience into her childhood home to explore her parents’ lives through their belongings, her father’s original cassette music, and her mother’s live cooking.
This intimate and immersive piece surrounds audiences with the sights, sounds, and smells of the Alvarez household, offering a tender love letter to family, heritage, and the adult children of immigrants.
Following a successful two-week run in Edmonton as part of Common Ground Arts Society’s Prairie Mainstage series, BANANA MUSIK continues its journey with warmth, humour, and heart.
