Mexico’s Marionetas de la Esquina and Presentation House Theatre are back together again!

The creative & playful minds that brought you Sleeping Beauty Dreams and Jack and the Magic Bean have teamed up to create Learning and Forgetting, a family tale about remembering.

Young Eva is excited to learn new words and ideas. Her beloved Grandpa forgets – his memories and words aren’t close at hand anymore. But that doesn’t keep them from playing in the present and creating new stories together. This joyful theatrical experience for kids (ages 3-7) explores intergenerational love with warmth, laughter & puppetry.

Eva and her brother lift Grandpa’s spirits on moving day as he transitions into a new home.  Follow along as they find joy in the moment and learn understanding for a lifetime.

Written by award-winning playwright Amaranta Leyva, Learning & Forgetting is based on her own family experiences.

“This is a tribute to my father, Lucio,” says Leyva of Lucio Espíndola, founding patriarch of Marionetas de la Esquina. “When he began to lose his memory, his awareness became focused in the present, just as a small child’s often is. While one learns, the other forgets.”

It’s been a long and wonderful creative journey to get here!
Learning & Forgetting is the latest in a string of playful international collaborations between Mexico’s Marionetas de la Esquina and Presentation House Theatre. Since starting in 2017, work on this warm and whimsical creation has progressed across cultures, time zones, landscapes and the pandemic to arrive here for you in 2022.
In December 2021, Marionetas de la Esquina premiered the Spanish version of Learning & Forgetting in Coyoacán near Mexico City to critical and audience acclaim. This North Vancouver production marks Leyva’s English language debut of the show.
